How Long To Heal?

I am 73 yo and I had quit smoking 12 years ago after a 48 year habit. I thought I was in the clear but I ended up with cancer in my left lower lobe. I chose surgery over radiation. I felt surgery was more of a guarantee that the cancer would be gone entirely. I had a cancerous nodule and three enlarged nodes that were removed a week ago. They removed the lower quarter of my left lung. I am now in a nursing home for rehabilitation. The pain was worse than I was prepared for but the fact that I have such trouble breathing is what I’m having most trouble dealing with. Of course I’m on oxygen full time. I will be in here until Nov 4th. and then I think my insurance will give me some short term help at home.
I just really felt like venting and I don’t want to scare anyone who is getting this type of surgery. I won’t sugar coat it, it hurts so be prepared. What I’d like to hear from others who had this type of surgery and how long it took them to get back to some normalcy. I can only walk a short distance and I start panting and then I panic.

  1. Hi , While you're waiting for feedback from the community I wanted to pop in and wish you a smooth recovery, Be gentle with yourself. It may not seem like a big change, but your body needs to relearn how to do something it's done since the day you opened your eyes on the world. Please do keep us posted on how you're doing <3 - Warmly, Donna (Team Member)

  2. I had the same surgery. The nerve pain still continues even though it's been 2 and a half yrs. But the breathing part has been back to normal. I get short breath every once in a while but I walk every day like the Dr's told me to.

  3. Im 4 years out..had 2/3 right lung removed..then chemo then radiation. Worse part now are muscle spasms where they had a drain in. I also have copd which makes it very hard to breath.but they daid i didnt need oxygen. Good luck..pulmonary rehab does help also..you have to get up and move.

  4. I had a lobectomy on the right lung in 2019.
The pain was unbearable for the next two months.
It left a knot in between my breasts that drove me crazy itching.
Everytime I tried to scratch, it HURT.
It is still there, but my cancer is gone
