How Double Vision Led to a Lung Cancer Diagnosis
Having suffered from double vision for 6 years and seen numerous specialists without a diagnosis or resolution I had resigned myself to this being the new normal.
A surprise in lab tests and a scan
A fellow running buddy told me of her story of double vision and having it corrected with surgery to correct a lazy eye. I decided I would give it one last try to have this resolved and made an appointment with her doctor.
This doctor tested me for an autoimmune disease called myasthenia gravis but said he did not suspect that disease. The blood test came back with a low antibody tiger for the disease. I was referred to a neurologist because this disease is autoimmune neuromuscular.
He did a muscle stimulation test that came back negative for the disease but ordered a chest CT looking for a rhyming (a benign chest tumor that causes this neuromuscular disease). The chest CT was negative for thymoma but they found a small nodule in the right lower lobe.
An early diagnosis from a quest for answers
It was biopsied and found to be adenocarcinoma. It will be reinspected on March 23. I feel very blessed that this was discovered at an early stage. Were it not for my quest to keep trying to find answers and for the doctors willing to listen and investigate possibilities of the cause even though they believed what they were testing for wasn’t what I was suffering from this may have been a whole different outcome.
