When to biopsy

I was diagnosed with a lung nodule a year ago on a PET scan. In a years time it has gone from 6mm to 11mm. When should I have this biopsied?

  1. That would be a question for your thoracic doctor. Are you on a CT scan schedule to moniotor the nodule and if so, how often do you get scanned? Best, Alisa, Lung Cancer Team Patient Leader

    1. Thanks Alisa . My error it was on a CT scan. I have quarterly scans. It has gone from 6 mm to 11mm in a years time. New CT next week. I'm just puzzle why my oncologist isn't requesting a biopsy. He seems to think a needle biopsy is not worth the risk at this point.

      1. I have a few things like that going on and they are still too small and slow growing that my doctors' are monitoring to me with scans and if there is any major change, I will get the biopsy. Have you had a PET scan to see if the nodule lights up? It's possible that it is too small to tell at this point. Wishing you the best with your upcoming CT scan, please feel free to update us and let us know how it goes. Warmly, Alisa

      2. Hi . First, I want to note that most nodules are not cancerous. Second, I found multiple sources that indicate 10mm as the point where a biopsy is often done. That of course is a subjective line and your doctor may have reasons for waiting. Don't hesitate to ask you doctor specifics about your case and whether the biopsy should be the next step. Also, know that you are always entitled to a second opinion. Best, Richard (LungCancer.net Team)

    2. Jumping in here as well and totally echo there may be a valid reason but having that transparent conversation to clarify why this approach is suggested by the doctor is warranted.
I also believe in having other eyes on situations is a good step forward as well. I hope everything works out. Wishing you the very best!
