Non treatment of cancer

My husband has stage 3b lung cancer. He is 82yrs old and has opted to forego treatment. He previously volunteered at a local hospital and witnessed many coming and going from oncology looking thoroughly miserable. It is so hard to watch the man he was disappear from view day by day. Can anyone enlighten me as to changes to watch for? Thank you in advance for any info you are able to share.
