What can I do

My mum has recently been diagnosed with non small cell stage 4 lung cancer. I don't really know how to deal with that. I was wondering if there is anyone at out there who is going through what my mum is going through, what can I do? Feeling very helpless

  1. I understand your helpless feeling. My mom was also diagnosed with lung cancer decades ago (I was diagnosed with lung cancer 22.5 years ago). May I suggest joining a virtual support group with other caretakers? The connection should give you much needed information and emotional support. I am attaching a link below if you would like to register. Please know that this community is here for you both, please reach out anytime. With warm hugs, Alisa, Lung Cancer Team Patient Leader

    1. Hi . First, let me say that your mom is lucky to have you advocating on her behalf and supporting her. I'm sure you being there for her means the world. Second, I want to let you know that lung cancer treatments have come a long way. We have contributors here who have had stage 4 lung cancer for quite some time. Our contributor Lisa wrote here about living with stage IV cancer: https://lungcancer.net/living/beating-incurable-terminal-cancer. In addition, our contributor Christine has now been stage IV for over seven years. You can see her bio (with a link to her articles) here: https://lungcancer.net/communityadvocates/christine-wu. Next, do you know if your mom's cancer has had biomarker testing? It is discussed, along with other excellent information, in this article from Dusty on must know information for the newly diagnosed: https://lungcancer.net/living/newly-diagnosed-information. Know that people here understand and that this community is here for you and your mom. Best, Richard (LungCancer.net Team)

      1. just had a look at what that was never heard of it, thank you! I don't think she has so I will be asking for her to be, this is all still new I'm looking at articles and research just trying to find the right questions to ask and understand the terminology they are using and just trying to decider everything. Thank you so much

      2. You are very welcome . Here is another article on terminology that may be useful: https://lungcancer.net/living/terminology. Please feel free, if you like, to keep us posted on how things are going and to ask questions. Best, Richard (LungCancer.net Team)
