Proton Therapy

Hi all, I'm interesting in learning about experiences with proton therapy for lung nodules. If you have had proton therapy, would you kindly join the discussion and post your experience - did it eradicate the nodule(s), any side effects, etc.? Thanks in advance for sharing. All the best! ~ Alisa

  1. And if you are comfortable letting us know which hospital treated you with proton that would be helpful.

    1. Miami Cancer Center at Baptist Hospital has a proton machine. I know people who have been treated there and are doing fine

      1. Hi , do you know if they had proton to their lungs or another part of their body? Thanks, Alisa

    2. Hi . Before I go too far down the rabbit hole I want to ask if you are interested in information on the research on proton beam therapy for lung cancer or just looking for experiences at this time? I can preliminarily tell you that the results have been good and that it particularly looks at early stage and locally advanced NSCLC, but the research is limited. Unsurprisingly, but also unfortunately, there seems to be a gap due to COVID (a lot of research got put on hold). Best, Richard (LungCancer.net Team)

      1. Hi . This paper gives a good overview of the research that has been done on proton therapy for lung cancer (note: it was published in 201😎: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6050808/. The big takeaway seems to be that it consistently outperforms standard photon radiation and confirms what I saw earlier about localized, early stage NSCLC. It also has a section at the end on ongoing research. I have not looked to see the status of these studies.
Also, I know that Penn is highly regarded for prostate cancer and the use of proton therapy (I also cover the prostate cancer site and have done some science writing for it). I know that U. Florida and MD Anderson have also done quite a bit of research on proton therapy. Hope this can be useful. Best, Richard (LungCancer.net Team)

      2. Thank you so much, I really appreciate your help, Richard. Have a great day! Best, Alisa
